Another lost sheep

Another mural is lost to the renovations at Good Shepherd. Though a mural of the above image that I painted in the Good Shepherd Youth Center a few years back was supposed to be preserved, word never got to the painters as they finished the classroom renovations.  I am sad to report that the mural is no more, painters covered it about a week ago.

Unlike the mural above the Youth Ministry bulletin board (see previous post) I did not take pictures – because it was not supposed to be removed.  The original digital design for our Youth Ministry T-shirts are the closest approximation to it.

On another note, I started a facebook page for the for my Pictorial Prayer to help promote my art.  Please like the page if you can. You can visit the facebook page here, and my galleries on fineartamerica.com here

Don't forget to visit my booth at this year's International Festival at Good Shepherd. Please keep me in your prayers and may God bless you!

The sheep listen to his voice

The mural of the Good Shepherd I painted over the Youth Ministry bulletin board at my parish of the same name in Alexandria, VA has now been torn down.  Thanks to God and a very considerate angel I was given a heads up and was able to photograph it before the wall was destroyed as part of renovations going on at the church.

I find it fitting that I was able to include it in a new online gallery I have been building: as this image is resurrected in the new online gallery, I too am feeling a bit of a rebirth as I try to listen to His voice and make more serious moves toward selling and promoting my art.

You can visit my galleries on fineartamerica.com here.  And this particular image here.

Please keep me in your prayers and may God bless you!

Mother Mary / Madre María

(En español abajo.)

This is one of those drawings that I am still happy with years after I created it.  This one is all digital.  I did not even sketch on paper much less scan line work to paint over.  The vertical and horizontal lines that simulate panes of stained glass were a pleasant discovery when trying to finish a composition that otherwise looked incomplete.  It's funny how that happens.

I made it as a Mothers Day card we sold at Good Shepherd as a fundraiser for our high school WorkCamp trips in 2008.

When I think of Mother Mary being crowned "Queen and Mother of all Creation" This is how I imagine it.

(In English above.)

I meant it when I said "I love this image." It's one of those rare drawings that I can look back at years later and am still happy with it.  I did the original line art with some gray tones in 2008.  Just last week I finally painted a color version of it.  All the line work if from the original drawing, I did not re-do it.

I may still one day paint a version of it without the black line work.

I pray you find the kind of lasting peace only the Prince of Peace can give.  God bless you!
(In English above.)

I love this image even 3 and a half years after I made it.  This is one dawing in a series of a dozen or so comic-style columns in the church bulletin.  I was looking for a good image to promote a retreat for high school students.  Nature and hiking were easy to settle on. Working in the phone, to which we have become so accustomed and dependent on took more convincing.

The last panel where the young man is resting comes from way back in my memory.  Not the image itself, but the idea of resting in Jesus.  I remember I must not have been a teenager yet when I would I wearily shared with my mom that I'd often fall asleep at night when praying the Rosary.  My mom simply responded that it wasn't a problem because it was like falling asleep on Mother Mary's lap.

Fast forward 15 years or so to after my dad had passed away, when praying the Our Father at Mass as soon as I started "Our Father who art in Heaven..." would lead me into a crying fit.  For moths this happened.  This prayer I had recited for decades became real to me in those painful days.

My dad was indeed now in heaven.  But those months after his passing the joy of this statement would elude me.  He was gone.  Taken away.

It must have been about six months after my dad passed away that I had a breakthrough while being led in an imagery prayer by Fr. Larry Searles, S.J. during an Exercises session.  There was a point in this meditation when Jesus was approaching me.  At first he was back-lit as he walked towards me so I only saw a silhouette.  As he got closer and I was able to discern his features, I was facing my dad.  I can't tell you if it was my dad and not Jesus or if Jesus took my dad's face so I'd feel comfortable in his presence.  All I know is that that day I called God "dad".  And believed it.  Believed that when I said "Our father who art in heaven..." He really was.  He really is.  I guess they both are.

From time to time I still encounter those old tears in my eyes when I pray the Our Father, but usually they come with joy now.  Joy and peace.  The kind of peace you might only feel when resting your head on your dad knowing that he's taking care of everything.

(In English above.)

For some time I have been meditating on the idea of Theotokos, the Greek word that describes Blessed Mother as God-bearer.  I'm talking months.  Everything from what it means for the Virgin Mary to have carried Jesus in her womb, to what it means for you and me to carry Jesus in our persons.

Well, on my Ash Wednesday retreat it did not take long for Danielle Rose to bring this topic up in her talk.  I am still processing the many images she brought up that morning, and I hope to some day share with you drawings of all those concepts.  But a few struck me right away and after being run through the mixer that is my head this is what I came up with.

What follows is a description of the image as much as the thoughts and experience that led to this it's creation.

First thing of note here is the Rosary around the edges of the drawing.  I had never done this but, as I prepared to use drawing as prayer while we prayed the Rosary, I decided it would be too hard to hold on to a Rosary in my hand while I drew.  Instead I drew it along the edges of the blank page, intending to fill in the bubbles as we prayed.  This worked very well.  I know I will be doing this again.

The crown of thorns drawn at the cross and the Our Father on the third mystery were a spontaneous response to Danielle's music.  Instead of reading a meditation before each Mystery, Danielle played and sang her original compositions for each of the Mysteries.  Her song "The Crown of Thorns" still gives me chills every time I hear it.  I first drew a crown on the Our Father since I was filling in that bubble for that prayer, but when the song was not over and I was still very much moved and wanting to carry that through the drawing I searched for a way to continue that sentiment.  And that's what led me to doing the crown on the cross as well.

Earlier that morning Danielle spoke during her talk of the Blessed Mother being the spouse of the Holy Spirit and about Mother Mary giving flesh to Jesus' flesh.  In my mind I pictured Michaelangelo's painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel titled "The Creation of Adam".  You know the one where God's finger is an inch away from Adam as he gives Adam life?  Well, instead of Adam and God I imagined the Jesus and the Holy Spirit's fingers touching while Jesus was still in the womb.

(In English above.)

I was blessed with the gift of getting to go on retreat on my birthday last week.  As far as I can recall my birthday has never fallen on Ash Wednesday before.  And it was a wonderfully blessed experience from the moment I woke up to the time I fell asleep in my bed that night!

A heads up: this entry is a bit long and with more tangents than I would normally allow myself.  But I truly believe the events leading to it as much as the retreat itself have been quite providential and compel me to share all the details below.

From the get-go I knew I'd be unable to attend all 3 days of retreat because my wife, Sue works Tuesday and Thursdays and we only have childcare until 2pm each day.  The 1-day only option for Ash Wednesday was my only option.  ... if I could find transportation.  Did I mention we only have one car?  I could not take the car for 15 hours and leave Sue without transportation for the boys' school and her own commitments.

A month or so before retreat I had made arrangements to carpool with a fellow youth minister, but those plans fell through when an unforeseen change in their schedule came up.  With only a few more days to retreat I was resolved to not attend.  I made plans for my day at the office and lo and behold, the day before retreat I get and offer from this friend couple that they do not need to use their second car that day, so I can borrow it.  And they even drove it to my house that night!  I can't tell you how grateful I am to them both.

With transportation to retreat resolved, I did all I had to do to leave my commitments for the day taken care of.  With appointments cancelled and meeting coordinated and left in charge of someone else I went to bed pretty late.  I woke up early on Ash Wednesday and left my house to get in the car and start the almost 2 hour drive to retreat.  I am not two steps away from the house when I notice the beautiful sky.  Golden yellow at the horizon, bright pink clouds above it, and a bright blue sky above them.  God was determined to give me a feast on this day of fasting and and abstinence.

I arrive to retreat on time and make my way to the room where the first talk of the day will be taking place.  After greeting a few of the coordinators of youth ministry for the Diocese, the cheerful young woman sitting at the front of the room, clearly the person who will be presenting this morning, addresses me to welcome me and introduce herself.  Danielle then asks me what parish I work at.  Now, normally as an introvert, I am not a chatty person, but I was still in a sort of controlled euphoria from the excitement of being able to come to retreat and vividly aware of the blessing of the sunrise, the ride, and the simple fact that I was at retreat.  That meant that I was not able to simple respond with "Good Shepherd parish" but also explained "it's very near Mount Vernon, VA, George Washington's house, whom I happen to share a birthday with today."  I hardly got it out when Danielle jumped for her guitar to play and lead everyone in singing Happy Birthday.

It was just fun, pleasant, and just plain joyful.  Thank you, Danielle!

And that's just the blessings before retreat even started!  I'll have to save the rest for future posts, this one is just too long as it is.

(In English above.)

Long time no blog.

I went on retreat this past Ash Wednesday, and had an awesome experience.  I drew a lot as prayer and meditation as I usually do.  This is just one of a few images that came out of the day.

Thanks to the Office of Youth Ministry of the Arlington Diocese in Virginia for putting such a great retreat together along with Danielle Rose, who is just a gem of a talent and beautiful soul just eager to share her love for Jesus and our Blessed Mother.

Danielle's song "Crown of Thorns" was still in my mind when I was thinking of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  It's His redemptive blood our broken hearts need to be whole again in Him.

On a side note: I'll be collaborating with friend and fellow youth minister, Em Anderson supplying art for her Lent blog "Rend Your Hearts Not Your Garments".  Come to see more of my art and stay for some prayer.  It won't take you more than 5 minutes, I promise.

(In English above.)

Tanto tiempo.

Your Hearts Not Your Garments".

St. Francis / San Francisco

(En español abajo.)

This was one of the first one-page comics I did a few years back when I started doing Youth Ministry. I did a series of weekly one-page comics in our church bulletin for a while before the pace just about killed me. The art is very simple but this was the first one I felt I was hitting all the notes I was hoping to hit.

As a comic I was making art for ministry and relating to teens more than a regular ol' bulletin. Thematically I was introducing teens to a Saint, which was not new since it was the first and most basic way I thought I could use the medium in the bulletins. What was new for me with this particular comic was that I got two other "hits" in: (1) it is also a prayer, and (2) it promoted one of the the programs in our Ministry, Adopt-a-Highway cleanup – which incidentally is happening again next weekend on Saturday, October 16 at 9:30 AM.

(In English above.)

Remember Me When You Come Into Your Kingdom

(En español abajo.)
As we celebrate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, I think back to what should be one of the most meaningful parts of the passion narrative for all of us, the promise of eternal life in Him for all of us. Christ, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

In this scene of the crucifixion only Christ's legs are visible. I wanted to focus the attention on the two thieves crucified next to Christ. Like us, they are not free from sin. Our salvation, as theirs depends on our response to Christ. To love. To serve. And put our salvation in His hands, because we cannot save ourselves.

I created this image during a men's retreat at a Passionists (St. Paul of the Cross) retreat center in Pittsburgh. I distinctly remember it was a week before Holy Week and we were waiting for the results of a biopsy that would later show my uncle had a terminal brain tumor. Our mortality and the day we'll be in His Kingdom were very much present in my mind. I hope to one day depict what the eternal banquet looks like.

(In English above.)

A amar. A servir.

Reach for the Hand of God and Keep Climbing to Glory

(En español abajo.)
I am still trying to catch up with posting here. This time it's an illustration form back in February.

Through an introduction by one of my Confirmation program team members I made contact with the 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Hunt, NY, the most deployed infantry division in our military. Soldiers from Ft. Hunt have been deployed many times over. They have lost many and their community is hurting way beyond the visible wounds of war. They asked me to create an image that used their motto, "Climb to Glory", as a starting point and addressed (1) the need for spiritual healing as much as physical healing, (2) the suffering of families and the community, and (3) conveyed to the hurting soldiers and families that they are not alone.

After some sketching, much prayer and a lot of collaboration with the 10th Mountain Division people this image was born. I will let the image speak for itself. Thank you for taking the time to visit the blog.

(In English above.)

Turn Away From Sin And Be Faithful To The Gospel

Man, it's been way too long since I posted here!

I've been thinking for far too long about getting back to this blog. Not many things will be a more suitable return than the time I spent with Christ crucified tonight.

May you be open to Christ in your life.

I did this with the Facebook app, Graffiti.

Ascension of the Lord

(En español abajo.)
Long time no post, people. Please excuse the lag. Coordinating my student's Confirmation took all of my attention in the past month.

When I did the Crucifixion drawing in my last post I felt like I was in a roll and had to keep going. And since the Crucifixion of Christ is nothing without the Resurrection, I decided I wanted to make a Resurrection/Ascension drawing that would reflect the majesty of Christ. I purposely restrained myself from much tone. I wanted the drawing to have a lot of white to suggest a certain radiance. I was also conscious of leaving enough white space around the image to suggest the vastness of the heavens around Him. Nothing around Him but air and sky.

Above is the original pencil drawing. Below is a digital "ink" clean-up version that I did tonight because people at church wanted to use it for the weekly bulletin and the pencil would not reproduce well, especially when competing with other things in the cover as they wanted to use it.

(In English above.)
Tanto tiempo, gente.

Crucifixion of Christ

(En español abajo.)
For years I've wanted to convey the pain and suffering in a crucifixion image without being gory and relying more on an instinctual, emotional reaction to the image. Bold and graphic where the cross itself wasn't even necessary. After numerous sketches over a handful of years, as soon as I did this drawing I knew it was what I'd been looking for.

It's another example of a Meditation/Prayer drawing. This one from the NYWC in Pittsburgh last Fall. I've been wanting to make postcards and large format prints for sale, but since I've not done that in time for Holy Week, I thought I'd show you here. If anyone is interested in purchasing either, feel free to contact me.

(In English above.)

Drawing as Prayer or Meditation

(En español abajo.)
This is an example of a drawing I did for Meditation/Prayer. It was done in November 2007 during the National Youth Workers Convention in St. Louis. It is one of my favorite drawing from ALL of 2007.

In this image I wanted to picture Christ while the cross is still on the ground. I imagine this must have been one of the worst moments he experienced. The dread and expectation of the nails about to pierce his hands and feet must have been unbearable. Maybe he was even hyperventilating. Maybe out of breath? He must have had a sense of claustrophobia with all the soldiers surrounding him. Some holding him down while others hammered in the nails. I imagine that about all he could see clearly if anything was the open sky above him. I imagine Christ looking up at heaven looking for some comfort and at best finding a cloudy turbulent sky. Yet that sky was brighter than all the shadowy soldiers that blocked what little light might be filtering through those clouds.

Maybe it's because seeing is so important to me that, but the thought of not being able to even see the comforting eyes of family an friends in the crowd would have been unbearable for me even if I was ready for the rest. Thank God my salvation is not dependent on me. I would have failed miserably.

(In English above.)

Hubiera fracasado miserablemente.

Lent Is

(En Español abajo.)
This is my latest comic. With the beginning of Lent here, I imagined I was at a coffee house chatting with one of my students who had genuine questions about Lent and the whole idea of making sacrifices for 40 days.

The art itself uses art I originally created as a sketch or comic panel previously. The first panel is actually the last from a previous comic. The bottom image of Christ holding the light that guides the person's path in a sea of total darkness comes from a sketch I did during meditative prayer at a retreat some years ago.

Get Your Faith On

(En español abajo.)
From an old drawing to a recent drawing. The "Get Your Faith On" logo was done by Church Artworks for the Diocese of Arlington for it's annual theme during this the year of St. Paul.

Here's how my rendition of it came to be:

For months I'd been trying to better understand the mystery of God's presence in us and ours in Him in my own prayer and meditations. This came to a climax during WorkCamp, where I'd often be inspired by the teens and felt like drawing iconic figures of teens wearing WorkCamp garb. The icon that is the dress code of WorkCamp became a symbol of Christian service to me. I later used variations of that icon in weekly church bulletin comic strips. (More on that in future posts.)

It still surprises me how God slowly reveals Himself. Experiences set apart by months: from the retreat where I first started struggling with this paradox of "God in us and us in Him"; to a WorkCamp prayer I made up*; to a powerful Adoration experience–also during WorkCamp; to the moment I did the drawing at a youth ministry convention. All these things came to a head in a moment of meditative inspiration when I decided I wanted to do something I that would convey an ideal. And that is how I came up with a superhero-style version of the "Put our Faith On" logo wearing the standard WorkCamp garb. An ideal figure dressed with the clothes of service, soaked in the Holy Spirit, filled with a joy that cannot be contained, and reflecting the light of Christ.

* My workCamp prayer. Good and gracious God, I present my fears and imperfections at the foot of the cross. May you polish my soul that I may reflect the light of Christ for our teens. Amen.

Amen.

One has to start somewhere...

(En español abajo.)
I figure a good place to start this blog is with a portrait of Christ. I did this pen and ink drawing back in high school. It's all from my head, having used no reference. Back then I had not studied the human figure much, except from a few books, so I was mostly relying on intuition. What I still like about this drawing, the reason so many people like it, and the reason my mom still pulls it out for her students' to see during Lent every year is the expression. I guess knowing so little about anatomy back then, the sense of tender love in the midst of so much suffering was something that I could somehow relate to, connect to, and more importantly convey. I hope that somehow this image helps you discover an aspect of the person of Christ as it did for me.
