I did a series of weekly one-page comics in our church bulletin for a while before the pace just about killed me. The art is very simple but this was the first one I felt I was hitting all the notes I was hoping to hit.

As a comic I was making art for ministry and relating to teens more than a regular ol' bulletin. Thematically I was introducing teens to a Saint, which was not new since it was the first and most basic way I thought I could use the medium in the bulletins. What was new for me with this particular comic was that I got two other "hits" in: (1) it is also a prayer, and (2) it promoted one of the the programs in our Ministry, Adopt-a-Highway cleanup – which incidentally is happening again next weekend on Saturday, October 16 at 9:30 AM.

(In English above.)

Remember Me When You Come Into Your Kingdom

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 232px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_N08ZaWLBT3o/S7K--HE2XWI/AAAAAAAAABg/ENK_itlEXVo/s320/BuenLadron.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454632072959647074" />(En español abajo.)
As we celebrate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, I think back to what should be one of the most meaningful parts of the passion narrative for all of us, the promise of eternal life in Him for all of us. Christ, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

In this scene of the crucifixion only Christ's legs are visible. I wanted to focus the attention on the two thieves crucified next to Christ. Like us, they are not free from sin. Our salvation, as theirs depends on our response to Christ. To love. To serve. And put our salvation in His hands, because we cannot save ourselves.

I created this image during a men's retreat at a Passionists (St. Paul of the Cross) retreat center in Pittsburgh. I distinctly remember it was a week before Holy Week and we were waiting for the results of a biopsy that would later show my uncle had a terminal brain tumor. Our mortality and the day we'll be in His Kingdom were very much present in my mind. I hope to one day depict what the eternal banquet looks like.

(In English above.)

A amar. A servir.

Reach for the Hand of God and Keep Climbing to Glory

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_N08ZaWLBT3o/S7Kx9jH0DFI/AAAAAAAAABY/TOv0M_2NUt4/s320/20100201-10thMtnDivV3Sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454617769657240658" />(En español abajo.)
I am still trying to catch up with posting here. This time it's an illustration form back in February.

Through an introduction by one of my Confirmation program team members I made contact with the 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Hunt, NY, the most deployed infantry division in our military. Soldiers from Ft. Hunt have been deployed many times over. They have lost many and their community is hurting way beyond the visible wounds of war. They asked me to create an image that used their motto, "Climb to Glory", as a starting point and addressed (1) the need for spiritual healing as much as physical healing, (2) the suffering of families and the community, and (3) conveyed to the hurting soldiers and families that they are not alone.

After some sketching, much prayer and a lot of collaboration with the 10th Mountain Division people this image was born. I will let the image speak for itself. Thank you for taking the time to visit the blog.

(In English above.)

Turn Away From Sin And Be Faithful To The Gospel

Man, it's been way too long since I posted here!

I've been thinking for far too long about getting back to this blog. Please excuse the lag. Coordinating my student's Confirmation took all of my attention in the past month.

When I did the Crucifixion drawing in my last post I felt like I was in a roll and had to keep going. And since the Crucifixion of Christ is nothing without the Resurrection, I decided I wanted to make a Resurrection/Ascension drawing that would reflect the majesty of Christ. I purposely restrained myself from much tone. I wanted the drawing to have a lot of white to suggest a certain radiance. I was also conscious of leaving enough white space around the image to suggest the vastness of the heavens around Him. Nothing around Him but air and sky.

Above is the original pencil drawing. Below is a digital "ink" clean-up version that I did tonight because people at church wanted to use it for the weekly bulletin and the pencil would not reproduce well, especially when competing with other things in the cover as they wanted to use it.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_N08ZaWLBT3o/ShODuGPF93I/AAAAAAAAABE/iynjhm7P8VA/s320/20081103-7_inkSm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337754811335309170" />
(In English above.)
Tanto tiempo, gente.

Crucifixion of Christ

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_N08ZaWLBT3o/Sdqr6mjb3dI/AAAAAAAAAA8/HKaS9M773CU/s320/20081103-6sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321754932961598930" />(En español abajo.)
For years I've wanted to convey the pain and suffering in a crucifixion image without being gory and relying more on an instinctual, emotional reaction to the image. Bold and graphic where the cross itself wasn't even necessary. After numerous sketches over a handful of years, as soon as I did this drawing I knew it was what I'd been looking for.

It's another example of a Meditation/Prayer drawing. This one from the NYWC in Pittsburgh last Fall. I've been wanting to make postcards and large format prints for sale, but since I've not done that in time for Holy Week, I thought I'd show you here. If anyone is interested in purchasing either, feel free to contact me.

(In English above.)

It was done in November 2007 during the National Youth Workers Convention in St. Louis. It is one of my favorite drawing from ALL of 2007.

In this image I wanted to picture Christ while the cross is still on the ground. I imagine this must have been one of the worst moments he experienced. The dread and expectation of the nails about to pierce his hands and feet must have been unbearable. Maybe he was even hyperventilating. Maybe out of breath? He must have had a sense of claustrophobia with all the soldiers surrounding him. Some holding him down while others hammered in the nails. I imagine that about all he could see clearly if anything was the open sky above him. I imagine Christ looking up at heaven looking for some comfort and at best finding a cloudy turbulent sky. Yet that sky was brighter than all the shadowy soldiers that blocked what little light might be filtering through those clouds.

Maybe it's because seeing is so important to me that, but the thought of not being able to even see the comforting eyes of family an friends in the crowd would have been unbearable for me even if I was ready for the rest. Thank God my salvation is not dependent on me. I would have failed miserably.

(In English above.)

Hubiera fracasado miserablemente.

Lent Is

(En Español abajo.)
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 115px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_N08ZaWLBT3o/SayNZ2f74eI/AAAAAAAAAAs/bNDLur7i6kg/s200/LentIsSmSpan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308773536028680674" />This is my latest comic. With the beginning of Lent here, I imagined I was at a coffee house chatting with one of my students who had genuine questions about Lent and the whole idea of making sacrifices for 40 days.

The art itself uses art I originally created as a sketch or comic panel previously. The first panel is actually the last from a previous comic. The bottom image of Christ holding the light that guides the person's path in a sea of total darkness comes from a sketch I did during meditative prayer at a retreat some years ago.

(In English above.)

Get Your Faith On

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_N08ZaWLBT3o/SZzEEpkhEPI/AAAAAAAAAAU/2-6V7121fbE/s320/20081102-2SmWtext.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304330045293138162" />(En español abajo.)
From an old drawing to a recent drawing. The "Get Your Faith On" logo was done by Church Artworks for the Diocese of Arlington for it's annual theme during this the year of St. Paul.

Here's how my rendition of it came to be:

For months I'd been trying to better understand the mystery of God's presence in us and ours in Him in my own prayer and meditations. This came to a climax during WorkCamp, where I'd often be inspired by the teens and felt like drawing iconic figures of teens wearing WorkCamp garb. The icon that is the dress code of WorkCamp became a symbol of Christian service to me. I later used variations of that icon in weekly church bulletin comic strips. (More on that in future posts.)

It still surprises me how God slowly reveals Himself. Experiences set apart by months: from the retreat where I first started struggling with this paradox of "God in us and us in Him"; to a WorkCamp prayer I made up*; to a powerful Adoration experience–also during WorkCamp; to the moment I did the drawing at a youth ministry convention. All these things came to a head in a moment of meditative inspiration when I decided I wanted to do something I that would convey an ideal. And that is how I came up with a superhero-style version of the "Put our Faith On" logo wearing the standard WorkCamp garb. An ideal figure dressed with the clothes of service, soaked in the Holy Spirit, filled with a joy that cannot be contained, and reflecting the light of Christ.

* My workCamp prayer. Good and gracious God, I present my fears and imperfections at the foot of the cross. May you polish my soul that I may reflect the light of Christ for our teens. Amen.

(In English above.)

Amen.

One has to start somewhere...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_N08ZaWLBT3o/SZG2VoAzNKI/AAAAAAAAAAM/saPfALA1zDE/s320/Cristo+de+Miguel-colorSmall.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301218719026066594" />(En español abajo.)
I figure a good place to start this blog is with a portrait of Christ. I did this pen and ink drawing back in high school. It's all from my head, having used no reference. Back then I had not studied the human figure much, except from a few books, so I was mostly relying on intuition. What I still like about this drawing, the reason so many people like it, and the reason my mom still pulls it out for her students' to see during Lent every year is the expression. I guess knowing so little about anatomy back then, the sense of tender love in the midst of so much suffering was something that I could somehow relate to, connect to, and more importantly convey. I hope that somehow this image helps you discover an aspect of the person of Christ as it did for me.

(In English above.)
